Inside the Light
White Slate

Toronto artist Susan Bush Donati has had a lengthy career in painting, as she grew up in a family of artists and was encouraged early on to express her ideas though art. She continued to pursue her passion for art by attending the University of Alberta to study Fine Arts, the University of New Brunswick for Arts, and subsequently Concordia University in Montreal for English. Her scope was further broadened when she completed courses at Banff School of Fine Arts and Ecole Des Beaux Arts in Paris.

Through her recent series of ‘country’ paintings, she attempts to interpret her surrounding environment and rectify the genre of landscape with her memories in a mix of celebratory nostalgia. She is inspired by the local beauty of Ontario countryside and the tumultuous experience of downtown streets to produce vivid canvases bursting with life and colour. She portrays the small communities with pride and exultation, capturing their distinct character and identity.

Donati works in the Toronto area, where she has lived for the last fifteen years. During that time she has played a significant role in furthering art initiatives in Toronto and Mississauga, culminating in her role as the president of the Mississauga Art Society from 2003-2005. She prides herself in a strong sense of community, which is clearly reflected in her works and supported by her numerous awards and media features from numerous Ontario exhibits.

Her recent travels through Europe and Canada have further expanded her scope and artistic vision in capturing regionalist themes and understanding community identity. Her aspiration and focus is to share her appreciation of life through her work.

I am an impressionist painter with an addiction to brilliant colour. I begin with an under-painting in acrylic, followed by squeezing oil colours straight from the tube onto canvas, mixing and modeling with my brush. While the paint is wet, I scumble one colour into another, as I do not see colour as one dimensional.

Light in dusk, brownish-red soil, bluish-gray skies aglow with pink, the green-orange of vegetation and the chaotic kaleidoscope of urban energy – all of it is full of poetry.

As colours and emotions are interrelated, the use of brilliant colour becomes a highly personal work and one that speaks more powerfully and directly to the viewer. I try to fuse what I see into statements in my paintings and these are revelations to me.

In my landscapes and cityscapes, my goal is to give a heightened expression of the life around us. My hope is that one is transported into another, more beautiful and less rational world where colour is the lyrical reality.
